Veterans Day honors all American Service Members, with a special emphasis on living veterans who served our country with honor, whether during times of war or peace. As Air Force General Paul J. Selva once stated, “Only 1 percent of our population today will ever wear the uniform of this nation in any of its forms—soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, active duty, Guard, or Reserve.”
General Selva also highlighted that members of the all-volunteer military force swear an oath not to a political administration, party, or individual, but to the Constitution of the United States. “Every one of us wears the uniform of our nation because we choose to,” he remarked.
Service members take on inherently dangerous roles in the defense & protection of freedom & liberty, Selva explained. “For that, we have vowed to give our dying breath if necessary.” He concluded by stressing that this 1 percent—those sons & daughters of American citizens—are truly the nation’s greatest treasure.
